Michel Barnier tests positive for coronavirus and tells those affected: 'We will get through this together'

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has tested positive for coronavirus.

Mr Barnier, 69, announced on Twitter: "I would like to inform you that I have tested positive for #COVID19. I am doing well and in good spirits. I am following all the necessary instructions, as is my team.

"For all those affected already, and for all those currently in isolation, we will get through this together."

The French diplomat shared the message in a video, in which he wore a jumper and shirt, delivering the news stood in front of bookshelves.

Labour MP Hilary Benn shared a message of support and wrote: "All the best Michel."

Deputy prime minister of Ireland Simon Coveney said: "Take care my friend."

It comes after Boris Johnson insisted he would not ask for an extension to the Brexit transition period, as they attempt seek a trade deal.

A number of British politicians are in self-isolation for coronavirus fears, while some have already been infected.

The EU agreed to suspend travel between member states in a bid to stop the virus spread, while a number of countries within the bloc have gone on lockdown.
