A crew member has died and two others were left fighting for life after a lifeboat became detached from the world's biggest cruise ship.

Two other people were also injured during the lifeboat drill, which took place when the Harmony of the Seas was docked in the French port of Marseille.

A fire service spokeman told AFP: "One person is dead and four are injured, including two whose lives are in danger."

The 227,000-ton ship, which is operated by Florida-based Royal Caribbean only began cruising in May.

The Miami-based cruise line made the announcement on its official Twitter page.

According to Royal Caribbean's website, the ship arrived in Europe in May and makes stops in France, Italy and Spain.

The ship is 66 metres wide, and 362-metre long, with 16 decks, and carry up to 8,400 passengers and crew.
