Number of people in UK tested positive for coronavirus hits 2,626

The number of people who have tested positive in the UK for coronavirus is 2,626.

The figure is correct as of 9am on Wednesday morning and includes all those who have been diagnosed since the outbreak began.

The jump of 676 cases is the highest single day toll in the UK so far.

At the same time on Tuesday, the figure was at 1,950.

Any further deaths due to coronavirus since 9am yesterday will be announced later today.

Across the UK there have been 56,221 tests for COVID-19, of which 53,595 were confirmed negative.

Scotland earlier confirmed a third patient who had tested positive for coronavirus have died.

It said 227 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded.

Wales said on Wednesday its total number of cases had risen by 13, bringing the total to 149.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday said the government was aiming to test 25,000 people per day.

He is set to chair a meeting of Cobra this afternoon before his daily press conference.

The Sage committee of scientists is also meeting to consider the latest information on the spread of the virus.

On Tuesday, the government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance told MPs that as many as 55,000 people in the UK could have the coronavirus.

He told the House of Commons Health Committee that keeping the death toll from the outbreak below 20,000 would represent a "good outcome".
