TfL Tube strike: London Underground workers to hold two 48-hour walkouts this week

Alexandra Richards21 August 2018

Fresh strikes are to be held by London Underground workers in a dispute over pay.

Maintenance workers based at the Ruislip depot will stage two 48-hour walkouts later this week including over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The strikes will take place on from 7am on Wednesday through to 7am on Friday and from 7pm on Friday through to 7pm on Sunday.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union confirmed that the strikes would be going ahead on Tuesday claiming that its efforts to reach a settlement had been “kicked back at every turn by London Underground.”

They also claimed that management had "failed to make any progress with the union on the issues at the heart of the disputes."

Transport for London said the walkout was not expected to impact passenger services.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT is angry and frustrated that our efforts to reach a negotiated settlement to this dispute continue to be kicked back at every turn by London Underground and as a result we have had no choice but to escalate the action with these two forty eight hour strikes coinciding with a major programme of works on the network across the Bank Holiday weekend.

“Despite previous industrial action there has been no serious move by London Underground to resolve these disputes and the company need to wake up and take note of the anger on the shop floor.

“The union continues to remain available for meaningful talks in both disputes and the ball is in London Underground’s court.”

The Ruislip depot is situated between the stations of Ruislip Gardens and West Ruislip, both of which lie on the Central line.

Peter McNaught, Director of Asset Operations for London Underground said that the strike is not expected to impact passenger services.

He said: “This strike action by RMT Transplant Maintenance Staff will not impact passenger services. We have been in discussions with the RMT on this dispute, and we remain willing to continue these talks to identify a solution.”

The move follows a series of 12-hour strikes staged by workers at the Ruislip depot over the weekend of August 3 and 4 over the same issue.
