Uber passenger hit with huge bill after being taken on 20-mile detour through London

An Uber passenger was charged £102 after being taken on a tour of London's suburbs when he drunkenly nodded off in the back of a cab.

Daniel Kaizen had booked an Uber cab for a four-mile trip across Hackney, from Old Street to Clapton, in the early hours of Monday.

But after falling asleep, he was taken on a 20-mile detour when the driver headed in the wrong direction out to Barking, and then seemed to do his utmost to avoid the destination, by travelling around much of the North Circular.

The 26-year-old only realised the next morning when he saw a record of the indirect route. The trip should have been about £10 but instead came to £102.

"I nearly spat out my tea laughing at the route," he said on social media, adding: "Well, I was drunk, but DAAAAAAAMN UBER."

A screen grab was shared thousands of times on Twitter and Faceook.

The minicab booking app has since apologised and refunded the money.

An Uber spokeswoman said: “We are investigating exactly what happened in this instance and have given the rider a full refund. Unlike other transport options Uber offers transparent receipts with a record of every trip and a map of the route taken so if there is an issue it can be resolved.”
