Tulse Hill: Burst main leaves homes across south London without water

Jamie Micklethwaite15 October 2016

A large swathe of south London was left without water today after a burst main caused havoc with supplies.

The burst main in Tulse Hill led to thousands of homes across the capital being cut off from the water supply.

Thames Water customers across Wandsworth, Balham, Lambeth, East Dulwich, Southwark and Greenwich have all claimed to have had no running water this morning.

Fed up Londoners took to social media to complain about the situation, with many saying they were unable to cure a post-Friday night hangover.

Lewis Thurlow tweeted: "When you wake up early, big plans for the day, only to have no water thanks to a pipe burst. Thanks Thames Water.

And @_dogden added: "Please will you tell me when the water will be back on? I'm so hungover."

A Thames Water spokeswoman confirmed that 1,500 customers had reported having no water for hours.

Thames Water senior manager Steve Crabb added that the water main had now been restored and supplies were returning to normal.

He said: "Our team has worked really hard to stop the water flowing out of the pipe and we’re now seeing water pressure building in the network of pipes which feed water to our customer’s taps.

"Some people will already notice their water is back to normal while for others, mainly north of Norwood Road, their water pressure will improve gradually throughout this afternoon."

Thames Water could not confirm how many houses had been affected.
