Last Saturday about 400 people marched near Mayor Boris Johnson’s Islington home to protest against the plans. The main concern is that fire engine response times will be 50 per cent longer without Clerkenwell.

Actor Samuel West said: “As someone who would prefer my fellow Islington residents to remain unburnt, this cost-cutting plan worries me.” Alan Davies, QI panellist and star of Jonathan Creek, said: “Cuts to the Fire Service put lives at risk.”
