These were the scenes at Balham railway station as commuters battled to get to work after a man hit by a train sparked major closures on the Northern line.

Huge swathes of passengers queued up outside the station to board rail services into central London after being turned away from Tube stations.

The disruption began at about 6.30am this morning when a man was struck by a train at Kennington Tube station.

Medics treated him at the scene before he was rushed to a major trauma centre. He was today being treated for serious injuries.

Pictures emerged on social media of commuters squeezing their way into Balham station following closures of several stations on the Northern line to prevent overcrowding.

Jon Irwin posted a photo from outside Balham station and wrote: "When cycling isn't an important enough mass form of public transport and the tube is out this happens #Balham."
