New projects for developer behind Games village and Heygate Estate

The construction giant behind much of the athletes’ village for the Olympics and the controversial redevelopment of the Heygate Estate in the Elephant & Castle has landed two big projects in Battersea.

Lend Lease has been received planning permission for two big schemes in the area, totalling 214 new homes. However, the design of the buildings and prices remain a mystery.

The total number of houses and flats in inner London for which Lend Lease has won planning permission so far this year is more than 700.

Richard Cook, Lend Lease’s head of residential, said: “Our aim is to become one of the leading residential developers in the capital and we shall be looking to partner with landowners in both the public and private sectors to bring forward more new homes for Londoners in the next few years.”

The Heygate Estate scheme has come under criticism for the creation of expensive flats that are being marketed off-plan in the Far East.

Its latest developments in Battersea are in Surrey Lane and Victoria Drive. In addition to the new homes, Lend Lease will also build new school facilities for the local Saint John Bosco College.

When asked what the two schemes would look like and what the prices would be, a Lend Lease spokeswoman said: “At this stage we are not able to release the prices of the apartments as they are still being confirmed.”

The new homes will all be for private sale with no “affordable” units.

A Wandsworth council spokesman explained: “We are levying more than £20 million from these developments to pay for a brand new secondary school. The pressing need for school places means we cannot also deliver affordable homes on these sites.”
