Met training HQ to be turned into shops and 1,650 homes

The Peel Centre at Hendon, the Met’s training HQ since 1934, is to be redeveloped.

Mayor Boris Johnson has invited developers to submit plans, and he envisages at least 1,650 new homes there, as well as shops, a primary school, a nursery and green space.

In return, the developer would provide a brand-new training facility at no cost to City Hall. Estimates suggest the redevelopment will halve running costs and free up revenue of up to £6 million a year.

The site is owned by the Mayor’s office for policing and crime, but the facility is considered outdated. The sale is part of a wider plan by the office to save £60 million and protect front-line policing.

The site is the first major scheme to be procured through the new London Development Panel, set up by Mr Johnson to fast-track the disposal of public land to boost construction and housing.

The Mayor said: “This regeneration will create much-needed jobs and homes to drive growth in a vital area of north London... and cement Hendon’s future as one of the best police training grounds in the world.” Developers have until Thursday to express an interest.
