Pop superstar Madonna fell backwards down a set of stairs during her performance at the Brit Awards after a backing dancer pulled her cape.

The singer had just launched into her live performance of Living for Love surrounded by topless backing dancers wearing horns.

But as her billowing cape blew open her dramatic entrance was ruined when a dancer pulled her cape, causing the star to tumble down the staircase.

The veteran performer quickly got back on her feet and did not stop singing during the whole incident.

She later said she was fine and blamed the fall on a wardrobe malfunction.

Alongside a picture of the cloak that caused the embarrassing slip-up, Madonna wrote online: "Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight!

"But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine! livingforlove."

Skye Goulding wrote: “Actually well done to you Madonna. If I got dragged backwards down steps by a cape round my neck I would cry and go home.”

National Rail joked that the dancer responsible for Madonna's fall should check the time of his train, tweeting: "To the dancer who pulled #Madonna from the stage...check your train times here... #BRITAwards2015 #lasttrain."
