Residents are calling for Boris Johnson to be removed from the decision-making over Royal Mail’s development at Mount Pleasant, in Clerkenwell.

They claim the Mayor effectively disqualified himself by supporting the plan in a public debate last week — when he is supposed to be an impartial adjudicator.

The Mount Pleasant Association, which has expressed concern over affordable housing and the environmental impact of the 680-home scheme, has appealed to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to step in.

At a June 25 meeting Mr Johnson said it would be a “wonderful place to live”. The residents wrote to Mr Pickles: “Mr Johnson’s... comments in the public debate have fatally compromised his quasi-judicial position.”

But Sir Edward Lister, Deputy Mayor for planning, said: “The Mayor will consider all of the benefits and drawbacks of the scheme in detail.”
