A knifeman has been shot dead in Paris after killing two people and leaving another seriously injured, a senior French official said.

Sources from France's Interior Ministry said the victims were the mother and sister of the assailant who launched an attack in Trappes, west of the French capital, on Thursday morning.

A female passerby was also stabbed and seriously injured, one official added.

The man, whose indentity has not been released by police, is said to have sheltered in a house following the attack.

He was shot dead by police officers.

Gérard Collomb, France’s Interior Minister, tweeted his condolences following the attack which took place just before 11am local time (10am BST).

He wrote: “My first thoughts go to the victims and their loved ones.

“I want to salute the responsiveness and exemplary mobilization of our forces of law and order.

“They are already investigating the circumstances of this tragedy.”

A police source said: “The reason behind the attack and his profile are not known yet and are being looked into."

Trappes is located in Paris’ western suburbs around 27km from the centre of the capital.
