Barcelona coach Quique Setien says he agrees with captain Lionel Messi on some matters but not others, and claims he is still optimistic about Champions League success this season.

Messi gave a passionate post-match interview after Barca's 2-1 defeat by Osasuna on Thursday as the Blaugrana lost out on the LaLiga title to fierce rivals Real Madrid.

In his interview, the Barca captain warned that many things would need to change for the Catalans to have any chance of European glory when the Champions League resumes next month.

"There are some things with Messi I agree with and others I don't," Setien said on Saturday.

"If we play badly, as we have in some matches, we won't be good enough [to win the Champions League]. But if we play as we have in others, we will be.

"We have to improve many things. Be more consistent and reliable. But if we play like we did against Villarreal, I'm sure it will be good enough to win the Champions League."

Asked if he felt Messi's quotes were a personal attack, Setien said: "Not at all.

"We all say things which are sometimes misinterpreted. It's fruit of a moment of frustration. I don't give it any importance.

"The important thing is to think about the Champions League. We need to rest, clear our minds and approach the Champions League with the idea of getting to the final and winning it."

Messi also spoke on Thursday of a lack of intensity in Barcelona's play, and Setien said: "We need a better state of mind.

"Intensity has to do with your state of mind and at the moment it's not the best. We are all a little downcast."
