The now-fashionable riverside neighbourhood of Sands End, once a cut-off corner of south-west London blighted by a gasworks and dissected by train tracks, has been transformed by a flourishing community of interior design and homewares companies.

Chelsea Harbour and its Design Centre, nearby hotels and apartments, built in the Eighties, paved the way. Later came Imperial Wharf, a 1,600-home neighbourhood with a new train station and a river bus pier.

At Chelsea Creek, apartment blocks are being built alongside new docks and waterways, while the stunning redevelopment of Lots Road power station is under way and on sale, with homes that enjoy sweeping river views.

Chelsea Island is the latest scheme, offering 89 apartments in blocks with communal roof gardens, designed by “couture florist” Neill Strain. From £925,000. Call Hadley Property Group on 0800 540 4377.
