Manchester United 1-3 Chelsea LIVE! FA Cup semi-final result and latest reaction from Lampard and Solskjaer

1/59

David De Gea's calamitous evening cost meek Manchester United a shot at FA Cup glory as Chelsea deservedly set up an all-London final against Arsenal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard put their Premier League top-four battle on the backburner for the day as the club greats focused on securing the chance to bid for more of the sort of silverware they collected so much of during their playing days.

United had won the season's previous three meetings between the sides but Chelsea comprehensively triumphed in Sunday's semi-final, with De Gea in the firing line after his role in Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount setting up a 3-1 win.

Head to head

United have beaten Chelsea in all three previous meeting this season, doing the league double over the Blues and nocking them out of the EFL Cup.

Solskjaer refused to take credit for his success in head-to-heads with Lampard.

"It's down to the players doing well. We've been focused in that particular game, we've been having the margins, but it's all down to players when they go there and perform they can beat anyone."

Solskjaer responds to Lampard

So, what did the United boss have to say about the Chelsea coach's claim?

"I could sit here for hours and talk about this. It looks like there is a narrative to try to influence the people making the decisions. "But we had a penalty at Tottenham taken away from us which cost us two points. The Romeo red card when he nearly crippled Mason Greenwood. Mark Noble should have been sent off when we played West Ham. "It should actually be me complaining. There is a narrative but we just have to focus on the game, but I am not going too much into it. I am fairly relaxed on it. Referees are objective and are not going to be influenced by emotions."

Lampard makes United VAR claim

Man United have seen a host of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions go in their favour recently, including a couple of key calls in their match at Crystal Palace on Thursday.

Wilfried Zaha was denied a penalty just moments before Marcus Rashford put United ahead, with Jordan Ayew also seeing a goal ruled out for offside as the Red Devils prevailed 2-0 in south London.

And Lampard claims VAR has been going in United's favour...

"There is always a human element to VAR still, of course. Clearly they have to make a decision.

"The confusing thing about some of the recent decisions and the one last night (Thursday) is that it's a very, very clear and obvious decision that is wrong, that didn't get reviewed and changed.

"And a few of those have happened. And that is strange.

"I would like to think sometimes you have to be level-headed. Some may go against you or not, but it just seems a period where Manchester United have got a few in their favour with VAR."

Chelsea predicted lineup

With N'Golo Kante missing, we're likely to see a midfield three of Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Mason Mount.

Olivier Giroud looks set to keep his starting role ahead of Tammy Abraham, with Willian and Christian Pulisic out wide - and Willy Caballero should come in as Chelsea's cup goalkeeper.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Caballero; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Zouma, Alonso; Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount; Willian, Pulisic, Giroud

Man Utd predicted lineup

So, with Luke Shaw out, it is likely that Brandon Williams will come in despite Timothy Fosu-Mensah doing a solid job on the left against Palace.

It would be a ruthless call to drop Sergio Romero for David de Gea, but it's a big, big decision for Solskjaer - and to be fair to Romero, he's arguably been pushing for De Gea's No.1 jersey regardless in recent months.

Man United XI (4-2-3-1): Romero; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Williams; Matic, Pogba; Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial

Chelsea team news

The Blues will be without midfielder N'Golo Kante this afternoon. Frank Lampard was earlier in the week hopeful that the Frenchman, who has been absent from Chelsea's past three games with a hamstring injury, would recover but has now been ruled out of today's Wembley clash.

Youngster Billy Gilmour had been stepping up to fill the role in midfield but has been sidelined for up to four months having undergone knee surgery. Jorginho, previously out of favour with his future in question since the restart, will likely step in at Wembley.

Another player working to build up their fitness at Chelsea's Cobham training ground is new signing Hakim Ziyech.

The winger, signed from Ajax, can play no role in games until the new season but has been training with his new teammates this week and has settled well.

Man United team news

Luke Shaw is expected to miss out for United, but Brandon Williams should be ready to step in.

Both full-backs were forced off with injuries late on against Southampton on Monday and missed the win at Crystal Palace three days later. Shaw suffered a swollen ankle while Williams had a head injury.

Williams was expected to return to training on Saturday and could come in for his first starting appearance since the restart.

Solskjaer did not offer Sergio Romero any guarantees that he will retain his place as United's cup goalkeeper, while Jesse Lingard could also be involved. "The team is not selected yet. Jesse and Sergio both have a good chance of being involved," said Solskjaer.

"Jesse is a part of the club. He has worked really hard and he deserves his chance to come back in. We know his qualities. He has different qualities to other players and he knows we value him."

"Other than that we have a few people with a few little niggles that I'll monitor over the next 24 hours or so, and then we'll be ready to go."

FA Cup semi-final rules

So just to recap, United and Chelsea will have nine substitutes today, and can make five subs across three different points of the game (excluding any they want to make at half-time).

Should the game go to extra-time, managers can make a sixth change.

And if there isn't a winner after 120 minutes, then we'll have a good old-fashioned penalty shootout.

Arsenal await Chelsea or United

So, the first of this weekend's two semi-finals threw up a shock as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a brace for Arsenal to dump out holders Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's City were heavy favourites to win and reach yet another final - but they squandered both possession and chances as Aubameyang struck in either half to secure a 2-0 win for the Gunners.

The record winners of this competition, Arsenal will now be looking to lift the FA cup for a 14th time on August 1.

Arsenal had lost their last seven games against City but who better than Guardiola's former assistant to concoct a blueprint to turn the tide?
