The key to hidden Bayswater:new luxury flats in stucco-fronted terraces come with private garden square access

Located on Kensington Gardens Square, a former backpackers hostel has been converted into six spacious flats with original features.

Bayswater is reclaiming its classic style, as the shabby hotels that have plagued its good looks become luxury lateral flats.

The area was laid out in the mid-1800s with grand squares and cream stucco-fronted terraces between Paddington station and Hyde Park. Later, the influx of rail travellers triggered conversion of many houses into bedsits and B&Bs.

But gentrification is spreading, especially towards the border with Notting Hill. A listed five-storey home at Kensington Gardens Square was a backpackers hostel, but Fruition Properties has reinstated original features and reconfigured it into six spacious flats.

Residents get a key to the private garden square, recently upgraded with replica gates and railings. The flats are priced from £2.5 million. Call Jackson-Stops & Staff on 020 7664 6649.

Garden House, another of the square’s refurbs, offers flats with tall windows on to the tranquil green space. From £995,000. Call 020 7408 5155.
