Is this the best Modernist house in the world?Harpenden's 'hidden' Ahm House - designed by Sydney Opera House architect - is for sale for £3.5m

A Grade II-listed family home, built in 1962 and cleverly concealed on a leafy residential street in Hertfordshire, is now for sale.

Is this the best Modernist house in the world? Its credentials certainly suggest so.

Not only did Sydney Opera House architect Jørn Utzon came up with the design concept for the stylish six-bedroom home, the ideas were then realised by multi-award winning structural engineer Povl Ahm, who was working with Utzon on Australia's iconic building when he bought the plot of land in Hertfordshire to create his family home.

Ahm spent two years building the house that stands today, and he cut no corners in its construction.

The extension of the tiled floor from the interior to the exterior, along with floor-to-ceiling glass providing views of the garden, helps to ‘bring the outside in’.

Set over a massive 4,500sq ft, the open-plan design intentionally creates a flow of of the space that is flooded with light.

The attention to detail, from the exposed solid concrete beams offset by pale Aylesbury brick, to copper edging on the roof, is second-to-none.

The spectacular concrete-and-timber living room features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens, while the master bedroom occupies its own wing of the property, and includes a walk-in-wardrobe, bathroom and sauna - with double doors that lead outside.

The home is accessed via a car port which takes you into the main entrance hall

At the far end of the large, L-shaped garden there is a treehouse and a skateboarding area - both out of sight of the main house.

The Grade II-listed building was built in 1962 and sympathetically extended 10 years later as Ahm's family grew. Ahm kept an exacting eye on the project and it a further took three years to complete.

The home is located on West Common Way, a peaceful and leafy residential road the outskirts of Harpenden, close to Luton airport and transport links. Trains to London Blackfriars take about 40 minutes.

“Probably the best Modern house in the world” is how this property was described by architecture critic Hugh Pearman.

And he's probably right.
