Riverside living has always had a romantic appeal. But the capital has recently seen a rash of new developments overlooking the Thames from Wandsworth to Wapping.

From hidden urban canals to the boat superhighway that is the 210-mile long Thames, you can expect to pay a premium for a water view, but such a tranquil outlook is well worth the money.

In the Square Mile, you’ll be hard pressed to find a family house directly on the river, but there are plenty of luxurious new-build flats designed to take full advantage of overlooking the water, featuring spacious verandas and roof terraces.

Chelsea Harbour, St Katharine Dock and Little Venice are among the loveliest waterside areas in central London, while Meridian Water, Enfield is undergoing serious regeneration and is set to become an attractive complex of 10,000 homes along the Lee.

Hendon Waterside is another area to watch, with 2,000 homes being built alongside the Brent reservoir.

Richmond, Kingston upon Thames and Hammersmith have a good number of period properties backing on to the water and if you go as far as Windsor you can get wonderfully spacious detached properties with moorings – and just under an hour's commute into Waterloo.
