If you fancy living in a castle but don’t want to leave London, your options are limited. But this four-bedroom house, part of Grade I-listed Vanbrugh Castle in Greenwich’s Maze Hill, could be the answer.

Modelled on the French Bastille, the castle was built in 1718 by architect Sir John Vanbrugh as his home. It has since been used as a RAF school before being restored by Blackheath Preservation Trust and turned into luxury homes (pictures below).

The two most impressive features are perhaps the views from the roof terrace and the claim that a letter posted from anywhere in the world will reach you there even if only addressed to “Vanbrugh Castle, Royal Greenwich”.

For sale with Fine & Country at £2.75 million, it has our stamp of approval.
