Covent Garden's hip new hexagon flats: six-sided BT exchange building transformed into luxury modernist apartment scheme

The Swinging Sixties were rarely square. But often they were hexagonal, at least the buildings were because this ancient shape struck a chord with a new generation of Modernist-leaning architects.

A six-sided office tower, originally a BT exchange and offices, in Covent Garden is being split into 46 apartments for those with deep pockets.

Reclad in the Eighties in garish blue-tinted glass, the building is an incongruous presence in a low-rise conservation area.

BNP Paribas Real Estate, the developer, is giving the tower yet another makeover, ditching the glazed façade for a less jarring Portland stone exterior with full-height windows and balconies to maximise views. Two floors are being added to create penthouses 15 storeys up.

Hexagon Apartments will also have a hotel-style reception foyer, basement parking and secure cycle racks. There will also be storage areas and concierge services for residents.
