Oprah Winfrey is well-known for her charitable work. Back in April, she donated $10 million to coronavirus relief efforts and now the queen of all talk show hosts is back at it again.
The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation (OWCF) has officially donated $3 million to COVID-19 relief efforts in South Los Angeles, California.
The recipient of the TV mogul’s generous donation is South LA Forward, a newly created coalition bringing together three Los Angeles based organizations SoLa I Can Foundation, SEE-LA and the Watts Healthcare Corporation.
South LA Forward was established to provide 200 tons of fresh food to feed 80,000 Angelenos, as well as giving 200 scholarships to those who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and expanding COVID-19 testing and primary care for South LA residents.
SoLa has been working to deliver food weekly to LA’s most vulnerable residents. According to their website, their “partnership with the Food Bank of Southern California has helped [them] reach over 300 households, roughly 500 residents, and delivered over 3,000 pounds of food.”
“As I continue to seek out ways to support underserved communities, I was struck by the unique multi-layered approach to effect real change to the systematic barriers of access to healthy food, quality health care and educational opportunities,” Winfrey said in a statement.
Sherri Francois, the executive director of the SoLa Impact’s I Can Foundation shared, “We were incredibly honored to be selected by the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, along with SEE-LA and Watts Healthcare.”
Francois continued, “We believe addressing economic inequality and racial injustice requires a multi-pronged approach, and are thrilled that Ms. Winfrey has taken such a holistic approach in addressing these issues.”
