Eleven migrants were picked up by French authorities in the English Channel today.

A boat was detected four and a half miles north of Calais at about 1.45am.

The patrol craft Aramis was dispatched to the migrant boat, which had engine failure.

Air temperatures were thought to be as low as 5C and 10 of the individuals on board had mild hypothermia.

The 11th was reported to be in a more serious condition.

They were taken aboard the Aramis at 2.47am and brought to the port of Calais. All are now safe.

French authorities reiterated warnings about crossing the dangerous shipping lanes.

Yesterday 50 migrants were intercepted by UK and French authorities as they tried to cross.
