The toys are back in town as the much-anticipated fourth instalment of the Toy Story franchise arrives in cinemas.

It means that some of the most-loved film characters of all time will be back on our screens very soon, with Woody, Buzz, Jessie and friends starring in another family-pleasing adventure.

Sadly, it also means that the film series — which has meant so much to millions of fans over the years and continued to cross generational divides — is finally coming to close.

That said, Disney previously stated that 2010's Toy Story 3 would be the final chapter in the story, so perhaps anything is on the table; it took them four years, until 2014, to announce they'd be dusting the toy box off for one final instalment. Here’s everything we know about the film so far.

Toy Story 4 plot

Walt Disney/Pixar

It looks like Toy Story will heavily revolve around new character Forky, who's been created by Woody and Buzz's owner Bonnie. The official plot synopsis suggests that Woody will help Forky to learn the value as self-worth, as he doesn't consider himself deserving of Bonnie's affections.

The synopsis reads: "Woody has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky, declares himself as 'trash' and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy.

"But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep. After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realise they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries."

While further details have yet to be revealed, we can be certain that Bo Peep returns for the first time since Toy Story 2 and plays a major role, after featuring heavily in the trailer.

Toy Story 4 trailer

Toy Story 4 - Trailer 2

The full-length trailer for the film was released in March, following a teaser clip back in November.

The clip follows Woody leaving the comfort of his home with owner Bonnie to track down Forky, who's gone missing.

Woody comes across all manner of life outside his home, not least the returning Bo Peep, who opens his eyes to life outside the toy box and makes him consider leaving his old life behind forever.

The trailer also suggests that the film could return to the very earliest days of the franchise, featuring nostalgic clips of Andy playing with his toys as a young child.

The cast of the film paid an emotional goodbye after completing recording on the movie, with Tom Hanks signing off “to infinity and beyond” in January.

Hanks, of course, returns as sheriff Woody, while Tim Allen returns to voice Buzz Lightyear. Allen previously revealed he had to “resist getting emotional” when he filmed his final scenes for the movie.

There are also returns for the likes of series stalwarts Joan Cusack (Jessie), Wallace Shawn (Rex) and John Ratzenberger (Hamm). Annie Potts (Bo Peep) also returns for the first time since 1999.

There are a few new voices too, with a selection of major new additions joining the fold for the first time. Christina Hendricks lends her voice the film’s main antagonist Gabby Gabby.

Keanu Reeves also joins the franchise – the actor provides the voice of the Canadian stuntman toy Duke Caboom in a fitting piece of casting.

Elsewhere, Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key play the new, fluffy carnival prizes, Bunny and Ducky. Tony Hale is the voice of the neurotic new toy Forky, while Patricia Arquette has been recruited to play a ‘hippy mom’ in the film.

Ally Maki voices Bo Peep's best friend Giggles McDimples and Madeleine McGraw has replaced Toy Story 3's Emily Hahn as Bonnie.
