Henley: the Regatta and music festivals only form part of the story of this booming Thameside town

The Henley Royal Regatta is just the start of the summer season for this pretty Oxfordshire town.
The Henley Festival comes next, and runs from July 8 to July 13, with performances from the likes of Jessie J, Lionel Richie and the Gipsy Kings expected to attract 25,000 people to the stunning stage built over the river. Then it's Rewind South, the Eighties music festival that pops up in Temple Island Meadows from August 21 to August 23, featuring an impressive line up including  Billy Ocean, Kim Wilde and The Human League.

And after the crowds have dispersed, the Henley-on-Thames' wide main shopping street, countless pubs, cafés and restaurants keep residents happy all year round.

Unsurprisingly, the property market has always been strong in Henley-on-Thames, with families attracted to the beautiful countryside, top-class schools and tansport links to London.

Around 20 per cent of house hunters are coming straight out of London, says Johnny Morris, head of research at estate agents Hamptons International. "The most interest comes from Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham and Richmond. They are often families making the next step in their housing journey, moving further west and out of London's borders," he adds.

Along with movement between residents from the town and surrounding villages, there is a huge demand for quality housing stock and limited supply which means that property prices have risen eight per cent over the past year.

"Period properties within walking distance to the station, schools and other local amenities have seen the greatest growth and will continue to command the largest premiums," says Matthew Davies, associate at estate agent Strutt & Parker.

"But if living in town doesn’t appeal, the surrounding Chiltern countryside and villages offer a stunning alternative."
