A man has been found dead after an explosion at a house in east London.

Emergency services rushed to Waddington Road, Stratford, just before 8am on Sunday following reports of a large blast at the property.

Initially there were no reported injuries.

However, just after 1.30pm,  Newham police issued an update saying emergency services had entered the building and one person had been found dead at the scene.

London Fire Brigade  (LFB) said the victim was found underneath  a pile of debris.

They said in a statement: "It is believed that there was an explosion in a first floor flat which caused structural damaged to the building of two floors.

"Fire crews searched the property and found the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

“Around 13 people left the building before firefighters arrived.

“The incident has been handed over to the police and fire crews will remain on the scene assisting them with their operation.”

Scotland Yard said officers are now working to locate the victim’s next of kin.

Several nearby homes have been evacuated as a precaution, and road closures reman in place.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related. Early assessments suggest it was a gas explosion.

Enquiries continue.
