George and Amal Clooney’s plans for an outbuilding in the grounds of their Oxfordshire home have been given the go-ahead, after the star couple altered their scheme to safeguard a protected tree.

When initial planning permission was requested, forestry officers voiced concern about the impact on a nearby coast redwood.

Clooney took the considerations on board, made changes to ensure the tree wouldn’t be damaged and the objections have now been removed.

The Hollywood heart-throb and his human rights lawyer wife, who have donated more than £796,000 to the coronavirus relief effort, can now press on with their project, which will include a kitchen and lavatory.

They have spent millions on renovations since buying their nine-bedroom mansion for £7.5 million in 2014.

The Clooneys are also building a £90,000 two-storey playhouse for their two-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, at the family home in California.

Designed as a mini version of the main house, it is reported that Michael S Smith, who redesigned Barack Obama’s White House office in 2010, is heading up the project.
