The childhood home of Jackie Kennedy Onassis is for sale — and these walls were made for talking. Possibly the highest-priced house in Washington DC’s most elite suburb, Merrywood is a Georgian-style mansion built in 1919 in 46 acres overlooking the Potomac River.

Now on a more manageable seven acres, the estate has hosted Washington’s power brokers and superstars down the decades, from Kirk Douglas to Michael Jackson. It was visited so many times by President John Kennedy and his First Lady in the Sixties that the secret service gave it the official codename Hamlet.

The current owner, America Online co-founder Steve Case, has listed the house for sale for £38 million. It’s a classic brick and limestone mansion covering 23,000sq ft on four levels, with nine bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, all of which have been extensively renovated.

The large master suite has his-and-hers dressing rooms, a private study and an exercise room. There is also a climate-controlled wine room and a lift to all floors.

Outside, the terraces for dining have a full kitchen, and there’s a tennis court and an outdoor swimming pool. There’s also an indoor pool with separate gym and changing rooms.

Apparently, reality TV star Kim Kardashian is such a Jackie O fan that she splashed out £292,000 on a watch that belonged to her at a recent Rare Watches and American Icons sale at Christie’s. She could be the perfect buyer for this grand house.
