If these grand walls could talk, they could certainly tell a tale or two. Dating back to the late 19th century, when the absinthe flowed and great minds met, the Café Royal was a vision of Parisien chic in the heart of Victorian London.

Literary legends, including Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, enjoyed long and raucous lunches on a luxurious scale. Screen legends and rock stars, from  Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor to the Beatles, David Bowie and Mick Jagger, have soaked up the gilt, the glamour and the gold.

Following an extensive four-year restoration programme, Café Royal reopened as a luxury five-star hotel in December 2012, with 159 rooms and historic suites, a choice of dining venues, plus a spa, gym and 18-mere pool. And now, occupying the hotel’s entire first floor, is a recently-launched exclusive members-only area - simply called: The Club.

Signature style
The Club oozes opulence and elegance. Occupying Café Royal hotel’s entire first floor, interiors have been overseen by London design duo March & White, who specialise in architecture and interiors. The historic space has been transformed with a blend of elegant English and French design, adorned with bespoke rugs and plush velvets. Artwork from Damian Hirst and Christian Furr currently lines the walls

The Gallery, the club's day time space, overlooks Café Royal Hotel’s buzzing ground floor from all angles. The Club’s historic restaurant retains many of its original features, inspired by Napoleonic-era Paris. Both lavish and bright, it serves a British fine dining menu designed by Executive Chef Andrew Turner. There's also a pretty spectacular indoor pool in the hotel spa.

Insider tip
The table by the Library Bar in the Gallery is the best seat in the house for people watching while soaking up the atmosphere with a nostalgic tipple from Café Royal's 1930s cocktail book.

The Club at Cafe Royal is open for breakfast, lunch, cream tea, dinner and drinks from 7am until 1am, Sunday to Wednesday and 7am to 3am Thursday to Saturday.
