There are only a few days a year that your mum really asks for a day off - so it pays to know exactly when each of these occasions are.

Mother’s Day comes pretty high on the list for mums, so if you’re in the United States or much of Europe, don’t forget that it’s happening this Sunday.

When is Mother’s Day in 2017?

In the United States and many destinations around the globe, Mother’s Day 2017 is being celebrated on Sunday May 14.

In the UK the special day has been and gone. This year it was celebrated on Sunday March 26.

What is Mothering Sunday?

Mothering Sunday is a celebration held to show our maternal figures just how much we appreciate them.

The day has evolved into an occasion for kids (young and old) to honour and give presents to their hardworking mums.

In the UK, it was originally linked to religion as a day for Christians to visit their “mother” church.

Domestic servants were given the day off to return to their hometown and worship with their families as part of this celebration, and on their way home, they would pick wild flowers to place in the church – or give to their mums.

But the occasion has since grown to be a global day for celebrating family.

Why is it celebrated on a different day in the US?

Over the pond, the event was launched separately in 1914 by Anna Jarvis, the leader of the mums' groups which were established during the Civil War.

Anna campaigned for a May date in memory of her own mum – who had died that month.

President Wilson then later formalised the occasion and since then, many other countries have adopted America's example.
