Beauty spot: The nineties shag look

Shagtastic: Kate Beckinsale
Alice Philipson10 April 2012

As usual, Cheryl Cole is leading the hairstyle ranks - flowing locks weren't trendy enough for her as she switched to a shorter, more tousled style in time for spring.

Now Kate Beckinsale has joined her, opting for a new shoulder-length cut to show off her toned arms and dress detail.

The look is an up-to-date version of the Nineties "shag", according to top hairdresser Jason Cocking, and is extremely versatile: "It can be worn messy or with a little more curl, depending on how much time you have.

The key is to get the texture right - a blunt cut with a few long layers will allow the hair to move." Cocking suggests creating volume at the roots with Clynol Massive Volume Spray (£8.25, Salon-collective.co.uk) or Kerastase Nectar Thermique (£17.50, 0800 316 4400) and follow with Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric Spray (£21.50, Shuuemuraartofhair.com).
