Hawaian shirts, track-tops and macs: here are the seven items you need to look the part.

1. Silk route

Been there, got the T-shirt? Now souvenir jackets supersede a passport full of exotic stamps as the most desirable travelling companion. Originating in post-war Japan when American soldiers would have their jackets embellished with Japanese embroidery, the 2015 update — as seen as Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Valentino — comes in silky fabrics and blouson shapes. No need to send a postcard.

2. Back to basics

Briefcases: too executive. Rucksacks: too Cub Scouts. Introducing the new team leader: the ‘boardroom backpack’. Seriously. It will promote a pedestrian work suit into new cooler realms, but this navy leather one from Want Les Essentiels won’t scream ‘dad on a BMX’. It’s win-win.

3. On track

Designers’ love affair with sportswear shows no sign of abating: zip-up track tops ruled the day at Agi & Sam, Gosha Rubchinskiy and Ami. Channel your inner Damon Albarn circa 1994 in Fred Perry’s monochrome offering, or rip up the rule book and go rogue in sports suiting à la Prada.

4. Hawaii 2.0

In 1996 we drooled over Leonardo DiCaprio's billowy printed silk shirt in Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo + Juliet. Now Valentino, Louis Vuitton and Gucci have embraced wide-bodied, half-sleeved versions. Wear buttoned-up and tucked into the season's new, voluminous trouser shape for a laid-back look that will score you serious style points.

5. Wide boys

Hang up your skinnies - this season's trouser of choice is high-waisted and wide-legged. 'Dance like you're Northern' was the prevailing message at Topman Designs where voluminous 1970s flares and nipped-in tanks recalled the hedonistic heights of Northern soul. Meanwhile, over at Dunhill, there were roomy wader-style bottoms and boxy chinos. Pair yours with a slim-fit tee and chunky shoes.

6. Strapped in

Thanks to Bottega Veneta, Versace and Marni, chunky sandals are emerging as one of the season's biggest menswear trends. Pavement-pound this summer in a strapping pair of Lanvin.

7. To the macs

Men of Britain, rejoice. From streamlined parkas to the humble cagoule, you’ll be well equipped to face the elements this summer thanks to a host of brands placing practicality at the top of the agenda. Among the most functional is this all-weather technical raincoat (left) by Bally (£2,150; bally.co.uk).
