Young 2012 hopefuls get their first taste of Olympic success

Young Londoners were today celebrating success in Singapore two days into the world's first Youth Olympic Games.

Tennis player Oliver Golding, 16, ignited Britain's medal hopes with the team's first victory.

The British number one under-18 tennis player, from Twickenham, beat junior world number one and junior Wimbledon champion Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 7-5, 6-3 to win his opening match.

The junior Wimbledon semi-finalist said: "It's one of the best feelings I've had in my life. It's only the first match though and I've got four more to win if I want to get that gold medal."

David Bolarinwa, 16, from Thamesmead, who last week became the world's fastest under-18 100m sprinter, carried the flag for Britain at the opening ceremony. He said: "I felt a great sense of happiness and very honoured."

The 13-day event featuring 3,500 competitors is set to showcase the next generation of sporting talent and is being treated as a dry run for those hoping to compete in London 2012.
