Struggles of the stars

Female celebrities have told how they tried to use everything from nicotine chewing gum to therapy and even hypnotism in their struggles to quit smoking.

Anna Friel was spotted shivering as she sneaked a smoke outside the post-premiere party of her film The War Bride. Explaining that she had had a day of "stress, stress and more stress", she said: "Believe me I've tried to quit, I am booked into some serious therapy to try to give up. But it's not as easy as that.

"Recently I have been under quite a bit of pressure. I just need a fag to calm down - and when I'm not allowed one it really annoys me."

Camilla Parker Bowles finally gave up after 30 years, following pressure from Prince Charles and doctors' warnings that her habit was exacerbating sinus problems.

But model Kate Moss could not quit even when pregnant with daughter Lila.

Comedian and TV presenter Ruby Wax gave up cigarettes - then spent five years trying to stop chewing the nicotine gum she had turned to. "It got to the point I had to chew a piece every hour," she said. "I tried to just go cold turkey but found it impossible."

Wax turned to TV hypnotist Paul McKenna. After one session, in which it was suggested that when she chewed the gum she would taste Marmite, she was able to stop.
