Shock of toxins in humans

A cocktail of highly toxic man-made chemicals has been found in every person tested in a UK-wide blood survey, it was announced today.

The report - titled Contami-NATION, The Results of WWF's Biomonitoring Survey - reveals that chemicals such as DDT were found in high levels.

DDT has been banned for decades and has been associated with cancer and disorders of the nervous and immune systems.

Justin Woolfod, of the environmental agency WWF's Chemicals and Health Campaign, said: "The UK must take proactive action to drive through EU legislation that prioritises our health and the environment by phasing out the most harmful chemicals."

The survey, carried out in association with The Cooperative Bank and National Federation of Women's Institutes, blood-tested 155 volunteers.

Women and men between 22 and 80 years old from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland formed the study sample.
