Oscar-winning composer of Magnificent Seven dies

Elmer Bernstein, the Oscarwinning composer who scored movie classics such as The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, has died in California aged 82.

He was nominated for the Academy Award 14 times, most recently in 2002 for Far From Heaven, but only won once - for Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Bernstein, who started as a concert pianist, also composed the scores for The Birdman Of Alcatraz, My Left Foot and The Gangs Of New York.
