... and there's one Brit

Oldham girl Karen Elson, 23, began to shine in 1997 when she was championed by influential photographer Steven Meisel.

She now lives in New York but has modelled in Tokyo, Milan, Paris and, of course, London. She has airily conceded that modelling has its perks, describing herself as "a spoiled brat who gets a lot of clothes for free".

Despite her success, Elson once harboured doubts she was destined to model. She said: "I wasn't the model type. At school I got harassed so badly for being too tall, too thin, too pale - too everything that has gotten me where I am now, which is quite ironic."
