Goalkeeper Dean Henderson has signed a new five-year contract at Manchester United, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a deal at Old Trafford lasting until 2025 that also includes the option for a further 12-month extension.

Henderson recently returned to his parent club after thriving during two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, helping Chris Wilder's Blades earn promotion from the Championship and then spend much of the 2019/20 campaign competing for European qualification before sealing a top-half finish.

It was initially thought that the former Stockport, Grimsby and Shrewsbury loanee - who has also been linked with Chelsea - could return for a third temporary stint at Bramall Lane next season, though that no longer seemed the case after he said his goodbyes to the club on social media last week and Sheffield United subsequently sealed the return of Aaron Ramsdale from Bournemouth in a deal worth £18.5million.

There have been calls for Henderson to remain at Manchester United in 2020-21 and compete with the increasingly error-prone David de Gea for a starting role, though Standard Sport understands that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's preference is still to send him out for another loan stint elsewhere with Henderson also keen to keep playing regular first-team football.

Much could depend on the future of De Gea's current deputy Sergio Romero, who remains under contract until June 2021 but has been linked with a summer exit.

"The pathway that I have been on for the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable loan period at Sheffield United has been part of that," Henderson said after signing his new contract.

"The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group.

"The faith that the manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

"I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club.

"Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead."
