Commuter homes in Crossrail town Maidenhead: flats in Art Deco-style building once a Thirties cabaret venue
Covid-19 and Crossrail, the latter now expected to arrive next year, are likely to reinforce the commuter fortress that is Maidenhead, which enjoys a lovely location alongside a rural stretch of the Thames.
“We’re noticing more families relocating from west London,” says estate agent Hamptons International. “By crossing the M25 boundary, buyers can get more for their money and, soon, a much quicker commute to the West End, City or Canary Wharf.”
The Berkshire town became a fashionable resort in Edwardian England for those who couldn’t be bothered travelling as far west as Bath. A highlight of the season was Ascot Sunday when the smart set arrived on boats and boating parties were popular.
The Showboat, a Thirties cabaret venue, club and lido, was another hot attraction.
Later it became a Spitfire factory but the listed Art Deco edifice remains and has been reshaped into a scheme of 39 homes called The Venue.
