Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer are among the England Test stars who will return to white-ball action for next month’s series against Australia.

England have so far operated separate Test and limited overs sides this summer because of the hectic schedule, but Eoin Morgan’s squad will be back close to full strength for the run of three T20s and three ODIs.

As well as Archer and Buttler, Sam Curran and Mark Wood have been named in both T20 and ODI squads.

Test captain Joe Root is hoping to regain his T20 place ahead of next year’s World Cup and scored 64 for Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast yesterday, but is only included in the longer format, as is bowler Chris Woakes.

Ben Stokes remains unavailable for selection, having flown to New Zealand to be with his father, who is ill with brain cancer.

World Cup-winning opener Jason Roy, who is struggling with a side strain, has been ruled out of the T20s but will remain with the team in the ‘bio-secure bubble’ in the hope of proving his fitness in time for the ODI series, which does not start until September 11.

There is no place in either squad for David Willey, despite his excellent form in the ODI series against Ireland earlier this summer.

The increased competition for places means that several members of the squad currently involved in the T20 series against Pakistan, which concludes on Tuesday, have been left out, including Willey, Lewis Gregory and Saqib Mahmood, though the latter is named as a reserve.

The T20s will take place at the Ageas Bowl, starting of Friday, September 4, with the ODI series beginning a week later at Old Trafford.
