Our expert Celia Rufey answers your questions
Celia Rufey has been the Homes & Gardens decorating expert for over 30 years and she also has her own range of fabrics.
My country kitchen needs a contemporary edge and I’d like to buy new chairs in blue to use with the old dining table, as the colour would tie in with collections of vintage plates on the walls.
For an overview of contemporary chair styles, visit Twentytwentyone, at 18c River Street, London EC1R 1XN (020 7837 1900, twentytwentyone.com). You’ll see Livia, £271; cantilevered Myto, £224; Tate, £675; and the ingenious folding Stitch, £481 – all have blue options.
Don’t overlook 20th-century classics such as the Eames dining-height DAR armchair, £255, and DSR side chair with wire base (right in Ocean Blue), £195, designed in 1950 and distributed by Vitra (020 7608 6200, vitra.com). The first plastic chairs to be made, they have never lost their iconic status or reputation for comfort.
