Fashion designers took inspiration from the deep blue sea at this year's New York Fashion Week and now nautical-inspired hues of white and cool blues are strutting off the catwalk and into our homes.

The timeless maritime theme is subtle, yet chic. Ralph Lauren showcased his Riviera collection on the catwalk with blue-and-white stripes and smart navy tailoring.

The American designer has carried his coastal theme over to his range of bedroom interiors, with simple navy and white striped bedding the catch of the day.

Meanwhile, Tommy Hilfiger transformed his catwalk into a huge ocean liner, opting for bold yet whimsical nautical prints on his key looks for autumn, revealing the nautical trend isn't a one-hit wonder only for the summer months.

Hilfiger has transferred the theme to his homeware collection, too, opting for red, navy and white colour block cushions in his collection.

Add a nautical twist to your bedroom with a cotton swallow print duvet set, reminiscent of traditional sailor tattoos. A glass lantern with rustic rope detailing or a quirky glass bell-jar filled with your favourite trinkets can add a finishing touch to the room.

Luxury homeware designer Jonathan Adler has given traditional furniture a seaside twist with his navy-and-white handcrafted dining room chairs.

And textured, striped wallpaper on a feature wall makes a fresh, high-impact seasonal statement.
