Unbacked mat
I am trying to find a 330x276cm rush, sisal, coir, seagrass or jute mat that doesn’t have a synthetic backing which I can lay over original quarry tiles.
BP, Shrewsbury.

Natural-fibre flooring tends to be backed with latex as it adds stability, prevents slipping and blocks dirt. Hand- plaited rush matting, from Rush Matters, 01234 376419,, and The Waveney Rush Industry (right), 01502 538477,, is unbacked but although more textural than latex-backed, at more than £175sq m it is more expensive. Tim Page Carpets, 020 7259 7282,, can make unbacked jute rugs in its Yoga collection for £107sq m. Or try Marquee Matting, 01964 613080,, which has mats in standard sizes and can have them made to order in India, allowing 12-14 weeks. The company recommends coir as the most stable of the natural fibres for an unbacked mat. A 330x276cm unbacked coir mat made to order costs £101.
