I am trying to find a 330x276cm rush, sisal, coir, seagrass or jute mat that doesn’t have a synthetic backing which I can lay over original quarry tiles.
Natural-fibre flooring tends to be backed with latex as it adds stability, prevents slipping and blocks dirt. Hand- plaited rush matting, from Rush Matters, 01234 376419, rushmatters.co.uk, and The Waveney Rush Industry (right), 01502 538477, waveneyrush.co.uk, is unbacked but although more textural than latex-backed, at more than £175sq m it is more expensive. Tim Page Carpets, 020 7259 7282, timpagecarpets.co.uk, can make unbacked jute rugs in its Yoga collection for £107sq m. Or try Marquee Matting, 01964 613080, marquee-matting.co.uk, which has mats in standard sizes and can have them made to order in India, allowing 12-14 weeks. The company recommends coir as the most stable of the natural fibres for an unbacked mat. A 330x276cm unbacked coir mat made to order costs £101.
