London's design hotspots:Obica St Paul's

Obicà's famously stylish mozzarella bar has now landed in the heart of the City - at St Paul's - bringing with it a menu packed with fresh ingredients that makes this a sharer's delight.

Obicà, the fast-growing global chain of Italian eateries, has been inspired by the sushi restaurants of Tokyo and the city's unrivalled reverence of fresh produce. Much more than a collection of mozzarella bars, the restaurants are a global celebration of traditional and organic ingredients sourced from specialty suppliers.

Silvio Ursini, 49, is the Naples-born founder and president of the Obicà restaurant group and the former creative director of luxury Italian brand Bulgari.

Hugely passionate about food, Ursini has now opened 21 Obicà restaurants across the globe - with the St Paul’s the fifth installment opening in the capital.

Style: At St Paul’s, industrial chic and neutral decor meets contemporary European design - and it works. Fresh food is prepared out in the open and is the star of the show. Elsewhere, Italian marble sits alongside copper and stainless steel in the bright, open-plan space designed by Andy Martin. Oak walls are set off by blackened steel, rough stone and leather banquettes. 

By day, the contemporary open-plan space is flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling windows, while candlelight lends a romantic glow in the evenings.

Food: Choose lots of small plates and devour in frenzied delight. There's no better way to start than the mozzarella experience, sampling the deliciously creamy Burrata and slightly sweet Ricottina Di bufala alongside fresh, ripe Datterini tomatoes and basil pesto. 

The delicate, creamy mozzarella di bufala is flown in twice a week and can be simply enjoyed on its own - you will taste the difference and never want to go back.

The sharer board also includes a selection of 24-month air-aged San Daniele, Parma Prosciutto and smoked Speck from Alto Adige is the perfect accompaniment to the mozzarella.

Save some space, though, because the pizza dough deserves a visit on its own. Thin, crispy and slightly salty, even the simplest toppings make this made-to-order dish sing.

Other menu highlights include the homemade ricotta and black kale ravioli in sage butter sauce. Bellissimo.

Drinks: The wine list includes both traditional labels and little-known Italian grape varietals. In the evening creative cocktails inspired by Italian aperitivo are prepared with home-made infused spirits, syrups and infusions at the lively bar by the Obicà mixologists..
