What's on in London: Prototypes and Experiments VIII at The Aram Gallery

Seventeen projects and the process the architects and designers followed to achieve their vision makes for an essential viewing for aspiring students.

Prototypes and Experiments VIII, now until January 16, The Aram Gallery, 110 Drury Lane, WC2.

When designers push for something new, it could take them months to get it right. This illuminating show reveals what they do in the process — with notes, models, tests and, finally, prototypes.

Here architects and designers reveal their hopes, fears and triumphs for 17 projects, with the results laid bare in Aram’s spacious and airy gallery. This is engrossing viewing for all design buffs — and essential for students/aspiring designers.

For example, see how Carlos Ortega developed his quirkily named material Corkigami, above. “It’s unique in being sustainable, natural, lightweight, quite strong, flexible and warm,” he says.
