Design trends: statement sofas

This season's bright and bold statement sofas will transform an entire room. We find our favourites, from luxury sofas inspired by the iconic Chanel handbag, to bespoke wing-back glamour sofas draped in unusual fabric combinations.

1. David Herbert
London upholstery guru David Herbert has created a crazy fabric combo for the ultimate statement sofa, called Hanover, which is a 2.5-seater, 180cm wide. Choose fabrics of similar weight and sufficiently hardwearing, he advises. As shown, £3,500 with other fabrics available — in a plain linen, for example, at £3,328. 2. Tricia Guild
Designer Tricia Guild pioneered the statement sofa, with unusual fabric combinations from her own collections on exclusive shapes at Designers Guild. This is the new Smooth sofa in Oriago snakeskin cotton-mix velvet and Brera Treccia linen weave. From £2,025 for this two-seater, 160cm wide. 3. Aiveen Daly
London designer Aiveen Daly sees sofas as fashion, dressing them luxuriously in tailored haute couture, with hand-stitching, embroidery and beading. From the new Jewels collection, this is the Ice Diamond sofa priced at £9,350, inspired by the iconic Chanel handbag. It is hand-quilted in the softest leather with more than 250 symmetrical and meticulously placed diamonds (shown here with grey gloss legs but other finishes available). 4. Sofa Workshop
The Grande Dame sofa from Sofa Workshop is 220cm wide and covered here in cotton Butterfly Parade Lagoon from the new Christian Lacroix collection. The sofa has a sprung seat and hardwood frame (guaranteed for 10 years), and is upholstered with traditional craft in the company's Long Eaton workshops. 5. Interio
The Capri sofa by Dorya from Interio is an eye-watering £10,371 but is handmade in mahogany, with Dorya's new Midnight Blue lacquer finish, which offers a luxe look with a hint of metallic. 6. Sofa Design
The Bespoke Glamour Sofa has a high wing-back with an image by renowned 20th-century artist and fashion illustrator René Gruau. The rest of the two-seater sofa is upholstered in rich black velvet with Swarovski crystal button details on the inside back.
