In the Making: January 22 to May 4 at Design Museum, Shad Thames, SE1 (020 7940 8790)

London designers Ed Barber, above left, and Jay Osgerby, on the right, who met while studying architecture at the RCA, shot to fame with their design for the London 2012 Olympic torch, but their studio Barber & Osgerby dates back to 1996 and has a strong record of award-winning products, mainly furniture and lights. They are fascinated by the making process and their show reveals about 20 everyday objects in their unfinished state, from drinks cans and musical instruments to sports equipment and a £2 coin, revealing  their complexity and often an unexpected beauty. The designers say they are “freezing moments of manufacturing time”,  and that sometimes the unfinished object is even more lovely than the end result.
