Where can I find fretwork shutters?
We've teamed up with Homes & Gardens to bring H&P readers this decorating and interiors Q&A service
Our expert Celia Rufey answers your questions
Celia Rufey has been the Homes & Gardens decorating expert for over 30 years and she also has her own range of fabrics.
A house in the November 2009 issue of Homes & Gardens has windows fitted with Moroccan-style shutters of great delicacy and elegance. Can you tell me where I can find something similar?
HD, Olney, Buckinghamshire.
Those shutters were made in Marrakech some years ago and the interior designer who commissioned them is, sadly, no longer in contact with the maker. But, at Jali (01227 833333; jali.co.uk), you can get made-to-measure shutters in mdf fretwork (right). Look at shutter style 7259 or panel design 395, which are nearest to the design of the shutters you saw; painting them charcoal or black will create a similar effect.
Alternatively, a fretwork design can be laser-cut in mdf, or in wood of not more than 25mm thick, by Cutting Technologies (01226 283322; cut-tec.co.uk); you need to provide an image to scale, however, as the company does not offer a design service.
