Rhys Ifans is set to play Atticus Finch in the West End transfer of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer-winning book comes to London in May, following a run on Broadway.

Lee’s story of racial injustice and childhood innocence, set in Alabama in 1934, has sold 45 million copies around the world, and the production will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the book’s publication.

Ifans has recently completed a stage run of On Bear Ridge at the Royal Court Theatre. He was previously seen on the London stage in Exit the King at the National Theatre, where he played a 400-year-old despot.

Bartlett Sher returns to direct To Kill a Mockingbird, which is designed by Miriam Buether, with costumes by Ann Roth, lighting by Jennifer Tipton, sound by Scott Lehrer and an original score by Adam Guettel.

The production initially came under fire when the late novelist’s estate threatened to sue, saying Sorkin had changed too much of the story. The dispute was settled amicably.

Tickets for To Kill A Mockingbird at the Gielgud go on sale on Friday December 6.
