The north London rapper’s third album, GREY Area, is being hailed as one of the albums of the year: tight breakbeats, industrial bass, funky flutes and horns aplenty. She’s toured with Lauryn Hill, guested with Gorillaz, and Kendrick Lamar called her “the illest doing it right now”.
And she’s still only 25. Make way for Simbi Ajikawo.
If your house was falling into a sinkhole, what would you run back in to save?
My hard drive. That’s the one thing I can’t buy back.
A day of your life you’d like to live twice?
I was touring Australia on my 21st birthday so they bought out a sponge cake mid-gig with the cover art of my album printed on it. That was a very happy birthday.
And one you would choose to strike from history?
When I fell off the stage, trying to throw water out onto the audience to hype them up. It all went downhill from there. But I feel like it has to happen to every great performer at least once.
Best thing a fan has sent you?
I get a lot of sentimental cards and letters.
A word you’d retire from the English language?
Crudité. I know it’s not strictly an English word but I was on set recently and one of the crew kept coming in shouting: “Crudités have arrived, crudités are here.” Crudité is so extra. Just call it a snack.
Favourite smell?
Newborn baby.
Greatest invention?
I’ve put so many people onto hummus, pesto and sourdough bread sandwiches, but I’m not sure I can claim that.
Proudest moment?
Finishing this album. I’m just happy that I’ve made it to my third album, and that I wasn’t like, “one and done”. That takes stamina.
You’re best tip for anger management?
Breathe. As many as it takes.
